We have recently been out completing our annual tree survey. We survey our trees for health and safety issues.
We found several this year that will have to be felled. Today we felled some trees near Rockford which had been marked in the survey this week.
One was dead above the path, one had lifted its root plate and one had rot in the base.
The photos show Marcus felling the trees which were all fairly large oaks.
The one with rot gave us a surprise when before Marcus could finish his cuts it collapsed. It turned out the rot was more severe than thought and only the sapwood remained with the heart wood being like sponge as you can see in the picture. However 3ft up the stem the wood was sound and had a really interesting grain.
It was all in a days work for the West Exmoor rangers and there will be many more like it!
