Beach Fence Time

Once a year we put up a chestnut paling fence along the front face of the first stretch of Woolacombe Sand Dunes.  This is to prevent this sections of the dunes becoming heavily eroded by summer visitors to the beach.  In the autumn we take the fence down again.  The old photograph below was taken in the early 1970’s and shows the dunes heavily eroded.  By putting up the fence we help the Marram Grass become established which in turn binds the sand together, preventing further erosion.  Thanks to all the volunteers and staff yesterday for their hard work and effort putting up the fence.
