West Exmoor Coast

This property includes most of the coast between Woody Bay and Combe Martin, the Heddon Valley and Trentishoe Down, with some of the more remote and unspoilt stretches of the north Devon coast. Add to this the steeply wooded valleys of the East Lyn and Hoar Oak rivers where they unite and flow to the sea at Lynmouth, cliffs at Foreland Point and Glenthorne and some 65 miles of footpaths; the result is a spectacular and breathtaking example of North Devon scenery at its best.

Date(s) 17/04/2011 – 24/04/2011

Task

The High Brown Fritillary butterfly is one of the most endangered butterflies in the country and needs your help to survive. Spend a week in the Heddon Valley carrying out a flora survey on sites where they breed now, along with some where they have been found in the past. For a bit of a change you will also be carrying out important scrub clearing to create new wildlife habitats. All of the sites are very steep and the work is physically challenging but the views are breathtaking and the benefits to the butterflies are huge.

Have a walking adventure and carry out vital repair works. With a network of over 60 miles of footpaths we are constantly carrying out repairs and improvements. This holiday offers three days working on the footpaths and then two days exploring them with our Head Ranger who has a wealth of natural history expertise and a head full of local anecdotes to pass on! Please note Exmoor is very hilly and so the walking and work can be strenuous, though you’re guarenteed to have fun.

Spend some time with a real character; Rick Blackmore has been building and repairing stone walls at West Exmoor for many years now and we occasionally coax him into passing on his expertise. You will have three days walling tuition from an expert who will help you build walls that will last for many years to come. As if that wasn’t enough of a treat, you will also get to admire West Exmoor’s finest scenery with two days of walking. Due to the hilly nature of the landscape both walling and walking can be hard work but lots of fun.

Date(s) 27/08/2011 – 03/09/2011

Task

Come and take part in one of our most popular annual holidays on this fun-filled week. Start off by running your own stall at the National Trust’s Lynmouth fete on the Manor Green, or help out with an established one, with favourites including Punch and Judy, bouncy castle, splat the rat and guess the weight of the cake. The week continues with two days clearing litter from our beaches followed by two days walking in the spectacular scenery of the Exmoor hills. Whilst the walking will be physically demanding due to the hilly nature of our beautiful landscape, it’s also wonderfully refreshing and an awful lot of fun.

Task

Spend a week giving the small orchard, just below Little Hangman Hill at West Challacombe Manor, a little bit of TLC. You will be carrying out a variety of tasks to spruce up the orchard including laying hedges, pruning some of the trees, picking some apples (if they haven’t been scrumped already), building a bonfire and planting some new trees. This is a great autumnal holiday.

Task

An autumnal break getting stuck into some woodland work. You will learn to coppice in our woods, turning some of the produce into logs and some into charcoal. Most of our woods are steep, the work will be strenuous and you are going to get dirty but you will have a great time. And of course, you will be taking home a bag of charcoal you have made yourself.
