Over the last few months we have been working with St Margaret’s primary school in Northam and local artist Marci Baxter bringing the old Lookout at Kipling Tors to life. The once almost derelict Lookout has now been transformed from its grey and uninspiring state to a bright and cheerful place with fantastic views around Bideford Bay.
As soon as the path was repaired and the roof replaced, the inside was rendered and white washed so the kids could begin the transformation. All the artwork was based on what could be seen from the lookout including Beach huts, rock pools, flowers, Hartland Point lighthouse, birds and even a Parasender that was there on one of the visits.
The preparation included filming rock pool rambles, a scary assembly for Gregg the Warden and a full scale mock up of the art work at the school.
Once the bronze toposcope is in place the transformation will be completed for now, but as time goes by the art work will sadly fade and need to be done again by a new group of lucky kids and Wardens.
A big thank you to Marci and the teachers and children of St Margaret’s who made this a great success, with so many wonderful comments.
